Brusha Brusha at Skoo n in da Stweet

Today I decided to brush my teeth in a couple of public places. I walked around with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and a bottle of water. The first time I did it I was by Girvetz Hall in a little plaza area. People were walking around and stared at me. It's funny because it's not like brushing your teeth is a weird thing to do...everyone does, it would be weird not to! I guess it's just socially unacceptable/questionable to do it in public? I don't know...no one looks at you weird when you're camping and brush your teeth outside, but on campus they do. These two guys sitting across the plaza from me were staring at me and obviously talking about what I was doing. It was really hilarious when I went into section right after and found them sitting right next to me. I asked them what they were thinking and they said, "why is she brushing her teeth?" But that was it, they didn't actually ask me to elaborate or anything so I didn't...they were kind of mean and rude so whatever. Then later I walked around my block brushing my teeth in a swimsuit and spit in the street. It was fun. A few people biked by and looked on with confused looks.

When you tell a person "I'm a student at UC Santa Barbara" their first reaction (if they've heard anything about this school, which they probably have) is to say "Ohhhh parrrty school, huuuhhhh???" While many of us may shrug with an awkward smile and mumble something like "ehhhuhh yeaaaa hrurmdnnsndhdhsnrrnnmmsn," we all secretly do know that yeah, UCSB goes hard. Our secret, however, is about to be out.
MTV 2 recently decided to begin filming a reality TV pilot called "UCSB: College? Or Paradise." The show is not about following one specific person or group of people. It is about showing the multifaceted experience of the modern UCSB college student. All of the filming will be done with cameras attached to people working for the show who are disguised as normal college kids. So, if you're acting a fool at a party you might make it on national tv. These candid moments could be rather embarrassing and funny, or potentially achieve the fleeting fame of today's hottest reality tv stars.
MTV 2 doesn't want to just focus on the real partying that goes down here. They want to encompass the overall sex appeal this school has because sex is what sells and let's face it, UCSB has fucking sex appeal. People watching will definitely want to come to our school, not necessarily for education, but to walk around and see the sights. By sights I mean all the hunnies sun bathing in barely there bikinis all over campus or in their yards in IV and sweaty muscular men running shirtless through the neighborhood. Hot surfer dudes AND hot surfer chicks. Hot hook-ups happenin' all the time. Single peoples' dreams, taken peoples' nightmares.
Let's face it, UCSB is a reality tv show goldmine - it's got all that the public wants in terms of entertainment!

Response to Kips Lecture, lecture #2

Today the theme of Kip's lecture was "How do we define who we are?" He gave us a long list of classifications: species, gender/gender identification, age/age group, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion/belief system, physicality, marital/relationship status, national origin, occupation, education, socio economic, physical/mental/ emotional abilities, tastes, activities, personas. He showed us many different, talented artists who in some way or another identify themselves within a piece. Like Tatsumi Orimoto's "art mama" series. Although some perceive his pieces as making fun of his mom, he is really just engaging with her and remaining an active part of her daily life as she remains an active part of his. To me his photographs are saying "hey, this is my mom...and she's fucking awesome". It's sort of like how parents play with their children when they are young. The parents will come up with fun activities to do or places to take their kids or things to "make believe" about, knowing that in the future their grown kid will remember a morsel of all the things they did or that happened when they were growing up, but they know that it will better their lives. With Orimoto's work sure, he knows his mom won't remember anything they do together, but in the end, she is spending the remainder of her life hanging out and being happy with her son.

Reading Response to Ch. 1 & 2 of Understanding Comics

So. This book is cool! I personally have been one of those people who aren't interested in comics. In the past I did think (like the book mentions) that comics were just "bright, colorful magazines filled with bad art, stupid stories, and guys in tights." But about 3 pages into the book I was proven wrong and my notion of comics altered - not slightly, but dramatically. So first off, it is important to know that "comics" actually means something other than what it is associated with. It means "juxtaposed, static images in deliberate sequence." After learning this, the world of comics suddenly expands to a much greater field than what it was before in my head. The author goes back through time and reveals numerous situations in which comics arise throughout history. For example, the egyptian paintings. What really made comics begin to appear so evident in my mind was when the author talks about how the diagrams in the laminated airplane safety instruction pamphlets are comics - "juxtaposed, static images in deliberate sequence." Or how when you buy a piece of furniture, say a chair, and are trying to assemble it, there are instructions with depictions that show you in order how to make that chair - or COMICS! And these diagrams or what have you, are different from cartoons or icons. Cartoons would be like a comic but they are single paneled, not multiple panels. And icons are different from both comics and cartoons because they actually stand for something else - they don't exist to just be there, they exist to represent something or tell you something. Holy shit this is only the beginning it just keeps going and the eye opening info just keeps coming!

Reading Response to into in reader

After reading this introduction to the reader we have for this course, I became very excited. The intro talks a little bit about Marcel Duchamp, John Cage, Jean Tinguely, Robert Rauschenberg, and Merce Cunningham - the five artists featured in this reader. Although each artist was very different from the rest, they all did have some common approaches for defining art. What I gathered from this intro is what I believe personally - that everything in life is art. Everything we do, have made, the earth does, the earth makes all fit together in a perfectly puzzling way. Take a daily routine or a typical school day for me...the path I carve throughout the day is unique and complementary to the paths carved all around me here at UCSB and in the larger world. The five artists in this reader focus "outward on the world around them, not inward upon their own reactions to it." All of these artists have attempted to remain anonymous in their work, leaving no trace of their involvement in the piece to be recognized. They created with normal day-to-day materials people utilize regularly and depend on and thus glorified these unrecognized items. they "mov[ed] away from the idea of interpretive, self-expressive art," and thus they will never go unnoticed.
